On 26 June 2025, Italian project partners from CURIOSOIL and LOESS met at the ARPAE Technical Department in Bologna, together with four Centres for Sustainability Education (CEAS) from the Emilia-Romagna regional network for sustainability education, to coordinate pilot activities and develop shared approaches to soil education. The meeting brought together educators, ARPAE technicians, researchers, and representatives of protected areas.
One of the central topics discussed was participatory soil mapping using the Ushahidi platform. Each CEAS, coordinated by ARPAE and comprising 38 specialised facilities distributed across the region, will assess how to incorporate the tool into educational activities for both students and adults. The first pilot prototypes are expected by October 2025 and will be presented within the national community of practice to exchange feedback and refine the approach. The meeting also addressed soil literacy assessments in schools involved in the CURIOSOIL project.
CEAS representatives confirmed their availability to support the distribution of questionnaires in 2025 and 2027. Schools interested in participating are being identified and listed in a shared file. Both draft and final materials will be circulated. Several ongoing and proposed activities were discussed as potential contributions to the CURIOSOIL Portfolio of Good Practices. These include service learning activities developed in Controvento (CEAS Terre Reggiane–Tresinaro Secchia), composting workshops for adults (CEAS Tresinaro Secchia), and collaborative initiatives with the University of Piacenza, which are currently under review.
This meeting marked a further step in the collaboration between the CURIOSOIL and LOESS projects and the Emilia-Romagna CEAS network, supporting shared tools, practices, and strategies to build soil awareness and promote sustainable land stewardship.
