Soil Curiosities

Soil is alive!

A teaspoon of healthy soil can contain more micro-organisms than there are people on the planet. These microbes interact with each other, plants and the environment to create a dynamic, living ecosystem. The soil microbiome is essential for plant growth, nutrient cycling and climate regulation. It’s a hidden world on which we depend.

Yet, over 60% of soils in the EU are currently unhealthy, jeopardising these essential foundations. In response, the European Commission launched the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO) in 2021, marking a pivotal step in the European Green Deal.
