As part of the European School Heads Association (ESHA) Conference 2025 in Rome, the CURIOSOIL Projectwill feature prominently alongside its partners, ESHA, with a workshop on the second and third days of the conference. The session will bring together school leaders, educators, and sustainability enthusiasts to explore the role of soil education in societal change, highlighting soil as more than a subject—it is a lens through which we can examine societal dilemmas, from Farmer or Factory? to Nature or Jobs?
Soil education intersects with many disciplines — geography, history, biology, economics, physics, chemistry — but it may also deserve a central place in Citizenship Education, guiding young people toward a sustainable future. This workshop invites participants to reflect on key questions:
Why is integrating soil issues—and the societal transitions they connect to—important for education and learning?
How can schools and leaders teach soil education in ways that are engaging, meaningful, and relevant to societal change?
What experiences, tips, and challenges exist in embedding sustainability education in schools?
The session will be led by Harry te Riele, an expert in societal transitions with extensive experience helping people and organisations navigate complex change. His approach brings practical insight into how schools can engage with sustainability and societal issues in ways that resonate with students and communities. Discover the conference programme here.
